Patricia L. Hess, M.B.A. Partner, Human Resource Specialist, Project manager
"One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it’s expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Patricia Hess has risen through the ranks in Human Resources, never forgetting the lessons learned on the way. From having been part of hiring the majority of employees at a firm to being the lead in their lay-offs prior to the close of the firm, to the creation and implementation of incentive, safety and training programs, Patricia believes in the value of each individual brought on board.
Starting with an empty Rolodex at Celotex, she created a department that was a Resource for her employees. She was responsible for heavy industrial training such as “Confined Space”, “Hot Works”, “Right to Know” and “Lock-out Tag-out” and created the SB198 Safety Program for the Plant. Working with Workers’ Comp carriers she has successfully returned employees back to work at the earliest possible time, with all involved feeling positive about the return. Creating incentive programs that employees embraced assisted in lowering the number of overall accidents.
“Communication, Communication, C o m m u n i c a t i o n is key to Success in any area of a company, but it plays a crucial role in HR.”
Woodbury University gave Patricia experience working in higher education and honing her communication skills working with brilliant scholars, staff employees and administrators. While at Woodbury, Patricia worked with Payroll creating a seamless payroll process for student employees as well as payroll exceptions. She helped establish a new hire program, that assists them in orienting to the culture over a 90 day period, called a Buddy Program. She led the program and grew it to be an incentive/recognition program for longer term employees. Based on the numerous questions fielded at different times from supervisors, Patricia started a Supervisor’s Roundtable, a casual training based on departmental needs. Creating hand-outs from “source” materials, and facilitating the meetings, topics such as “Paid and Unpaid LOAs” and “What NOT to say at an interview” were covered. All this she achieved while earning a Masters in Business Administration along the way!
The Home Depot had new leadership when Patricia moved to join them. The opportunity to work at a large company with a new HRIS system and work “in the trenches” with associates was a great experience. The Home Depot taught Patricia structure and metrics. While there, Patricia successfully met all her metrics, including training, recruiting, responding to employee issues and program roll-outs.
Patricia has worked with attorneys dealing with law suits, workers’ comp claims and 132(a) claims. She has worked with Cal-OSHA inspectors, to ensure necessary changes and/or postings. She created and implemented a successful Rideshare program.
“The challenge and the fun of being in Human Resources, is that every day is a new day; you never know what is waiting for you when you head in the door every morning. It’s important to be pro-active, positive and objective. “
“Human Resources offers the opportunity to build a purposeful and positive environment as well as create employee ‘buy-in’ to the business’ culture and necessary programs. The role of Human Resources is to help create an environment that allows the Best to be hired and keeps them coming back every day.”
